Coach Jason Page
Coach Page, a native of Athens, GA, is entering his fifth year as a coach at Sprayberry, his first as the Girls Varsity Head Coach. He grew up playing soccer in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. His college career included two years at Berry College and one year at Georgia Southern University.
Page’s coaching experience, in addition to his four years at Sprayberry, includes a USSF ‘D’ license, instruction at the developmental stages and select level during the founding years of Athens United soccer, as well as
numerous camps throughout the southeastern US and Eastern Pennsylvania. He currently coaches two Athena teams with NASA-Tophat Soccer. Outside of playing and coaching, Page is also a certified official.
In 1999 Page’s career in restaurant management brought him, his wife, and son to Marietta. After the birth of his daughter Page decided to change careers, enrolled at KSU, and completed his degree in Social Studies
Education. After graduation he spent two years as a teacher in the Cobb County alternative program, six years in elementary, and has been at Sprayberry the past three years.
Page’s coaching style can easily be tied to his teaching philosophy and the values passed down by his parents who both coached. Mastery of both the technical and tactical aspects of the game are essential. However, even more essential, is team chemistry and a sense of community. Page values encouragement and support and believes that “nothing positive comes out of negativity.” Athletes are expected to uphold high standards academically and athletically and should model outstanding conduct in the classroom.
Coach John Thayer
A native of Columbus, Ohio, Mr. John Thayer grew up in a musical and sport household, having played a handful of both instruments and sports since a very young age. As an elementary school student, he played basketball, baseball, and soccer in recreational leagues, golfed frequently, and also played lots of backyard football. Mr. Thayer took a larger liking to soccer in third grade, dropping other sports and successfully trying out for his first select/club team in 5th grade. He continued with club soccer and school basketball through middle school, and in high school became completely soccer-focused. His high school club career ended after two highly competitive seasons with Blast FC and Ohio FC clubs, competing in tournaments throughout Ohio and the Midwest. At Olentangy and Olentangy Liberty High Schools, Mr. Thayer played all four years of high school, was a three-year varsity letter winner, and received OHSAA Third Team All-State Honors his senior year.
Following high school, Mr. Thayer played in intramural leagues while a student at Florida State University, and joined competitive adult leagues in Tallahassee after graduating college. He currently plays weekly at the
Atlanta Silverbacks complex in competitive coed leagues.
As a Coach, Mr. Thayer coached three years of middle school boys and girls soccer in Tallahassee, Florida, as assistant coach of Augusta Raa Middle School from 2013-2016. His coaching philosophy involves the entire team, emphasizing that learning the game of soccer is done as a group, as well as individually. Encouragement and communication are key both on and off the field, and living and breathing the game lead to a lifelong love, understanding, and enjoyment for it.
Mr. Thayer enters his seventh year of teaching this year, third year at Sprayberry. In addition to being orchestra teacher and director, he still performs as a violinist in various gigs throughout Atlanta and the southeast, and teaches violin privately. He is a huge Atlanta United supporter and season ticket holder, golfs whenever there is time, and hopes to one day get better at tennis.
Community Coach Isaac Page
A 2014 Sprayberry grad, Coach Isaac is returning to his SHS roots to serve in his first year as “Community Coach” with the girls JV team. Prior to playing varsity soccer during his years at Sprayberry, Coach Isaac first honed and developed his skills playing youth soccer with North Atlanta Soccer Association – now known as NASA Tophat.
As a Coach, Isaac started coaching Boy’s US Junior Academy at NASA in the fall of 2014. He is still involved with NASA Tophat and coaches at the Junior Academy level there. Additionally, he holds private training lessons as well as after school training with Cobb Soccer Academy.
Team Manager Kelly Mellen
This is Kelly’s first year serving as Team Manager for the girls teams. She and her husband Mickey have two daughters, Macey (sophomore in the ISLA Program at Sprayberry) and Mariana (7th grader at Simpson). Even though she didn’t grow up around soccer and is a passionate (American) football fan, Kelly has developed a love for futbol over the last several years as well. She is an advocate for all things Sprayberry and is particularly enthusiastic about our incredible soccer program. Kelly is all in on believing the hype and is looking forward to a tremendous season for our Sprayberry Yellow Jackets on the pitch.
